Gerrymandering is named after Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry. The term was coined in 1812 when the Massachusetts legislature redrew a tortuous electoral district that had the same serpentine qualities as a salamander. Marrying the last name of the governor with the last 2 syllables of the amphibian gave us the bizarre nomenclature that is still in use today!
